The History of Homeschooling in South Dakota

What we obtain too cheaply we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives everything its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as freedom should not be highly rated.” –Thomas Paine, The American Crisis No. 1, 1776.”

Since July 1st, 2021 South Dakota has been one of the best states in the nation to homeschool in. But it hasn’t always been this way. We believe it’s important to remember the history, the battles fought, and the sacrifices made that got us to this place. We cannot allow South Dakotans to take this freedom for granted, we cannot, as Thomas Paine so eloquently puts it, “esteem this too lightly.” This road to freedom was not obtained cheaply, but if we don’t preserve our history it can be easy to forget and take our current freedom for granted.

Check back soon as we preserve the legacy that homeschooling families in South Dakota have fought so hard for.
